For your next vacation, you are considering chartering a bareboat catamaran in the Caribbean…but are you qualified to do so?

If you want to try a bareboat catamaran charter, you need to have experience on similar-sized boats.

You will need to complete a sailing resume listing your experience and certificates. While certificates are helpful, hands on experience is more important. A captain will then take you out after your briefing to determine your capabilities.

Fast forward…you pass the checkout and charter your bareboat catamaran.

Warning:  once you have vacationed this way, you may never take another type of vacation!  You can do what you want when you want.  Dive, eat, drink, beach comb, snorkel, swim or sleep whenever and wherever you choose.

Catamarans are a good choice for your boating vacation and are becoming more and more popular. They are great for families and friends, and they offer a lot of comfort, space, and privacy.  They have equal accommodations for all guests and are very spacious and comfortable. Catamarans are stable and generally do not cause seasickness.  They also usually carry multiple watersports toys for your enjoyment on charter, and there is no more relaxing and enjoyable way to enjoy the exhiliaration of sail than by lounging on the forward trampolines – often the site under which dolphins play on the bow as you sail!

There are 3 ways to charter a bareboat (boat without crew…similar to renting a car) for a vacation.

You can:

1.  Bareboat — You rent the boat and sail (or motor) it, yourself, with you and guests/family/friends as crew.
2.  Bareboat with captain-only — You rent the boat, but you hire a captain to sail the boat for the entire vacation.
3.   Bareboat with captain-only for a brief time — You rent the boat, but you hire a captain (skipper) to sail the boat for a few days, after which, you take over as captain.

Bareboat charters offer qualified sailors the ultimate in vacation freedom. Visit and explore remote beaches, participate in festivities ashore, or just get away and go where you want when you want when you charter a boat without crew and sail it yourself.

On a bareboat charter, you have no crew and no timetable — you simply have endless beaches, coves, and islands to explore!

If you choose a bareboat charter, you sail the boat yourself (similar to renting a car — you rent the boat and drive it on your own), so you need to have sailing experience to qualify before being allowed to charter the boat.

If you aren’t qualified to sail the yacht yourself, you can easily hire a qualified captain for the entire vacation.

A skippered bareboat includes a freelance skipper but may not be any cheaper than a private yacht with a full crew, as you pay the freelance skipper by the day, you feed him/her, and you give him/her a gratuity at the end of the charter.  (So your best bet is to truly charter a fully-crewed yacht and experience the pampering of a lifetime!)

If you ARE qualified to sail the boat, yourself, but are just a bit rusty or haven’t sailed in a long time, you can hire a captain for just a few days — after which, he/she will approve you to continue sailing the boat on your own as a true bareboat.

You may end up deciding to rent a fully-crewed yacht rather than going on a bareboat charter vacation. Either way, you are enjoying the freedom of being aboard your own private yacht!

When you select a private yacht with full crew, a suitable crew is matched to your party, and you receive a yacht with permanent captain and chef (and sometimes even more crew members, mostly depending upon the size of the yacht).

Depending upon the type of crewed yacht that you charter and in which location, prices are sometimes all-inclusive — including full crew, open bar, house wines, all meals, and all watersports activities.  You are able to choose the day’s itinerary, menu, and activities, as you’ll plan these things with your captain and chef.
